Stanford vs. Iowa
Spread: Stanford -6
Spread: Remember the days when the Rose Bowl was a big deal? The Grand Daddy Of Em All. Well, it’s not anymore, at least when it’s not in the rotation as part of the college football playoff. And this one is just the most “blah” game ever too. There’s some intrigue for those who haven’t had the opportunity to fully appreciate the greatness of Christian McCaffrey, but other than that, yuck, just yuck. Iowa had a much better showing in the Big 10 Championship than many expected, but they still went undefeated until that game, came up short and most back to doubting their legitimacy once again. Stanford just kept getting better and better as the year went on, but could never escape the disaster against Northwestern and wound up losing another game to Oregon. Both teams should be up for playing because somehow in Pac 12 and Big 10 country this game still has more significant meaning than other bowls. Stanford is the more complete team and has faced (and fared better against) the tougher competition during the season. Pick: Stanford -6
Total: The days of the old Stanford that dominated defensively and just snuck by on offense are long gone. The Cardinal are an absolutely juggernaut on offense and amazingly, the good Iowa defense was prone to giving up some points to the better offenses they faced (most notably Minnesota scoring 35). Iowa has the ability to keep up in these games as they are incredibly fundamentally sound and simply don’t hurt themselves when they have the ball. It’s hard to image the Hawkeyes holding Stanford down for too much of the game, so Iowa will have to score to stay in the game. This makes for a modified (because Iowa’s style cannot really be defined as such) shootout. Pick: Over 53.5
